For Boston resident Richard Voos, libraries have always felt like home. His father, a graduate of Columbia University’s Library School who later taught library science at Rutgers, instilled in Richard a deep appreciation for books and reading.
Richard began his career at the circulation desk at Tufts University Library, an experience that gave him lasting respect for the staff who keep libraries running. He later earned his master’s degree in library and information science from Simmons University and eventually served in various administrative roles outside the libraries at Babson College and Simmons.
His enduring connection to libraries inspired him to establish the Henry Voos Endowed Fund for Staff Development in honor of his father. Created through the Boston Public Library Fund, the endowment provides professional-development resources for Boston Public Library (BPL) staff with a preference for those participating in the Simmons University Library Fellows Program.
In addition to making a current gift to establish the endowment, Richard has included the Boston Public Library Fund in his estate plan to ensure the fund’s long-term sustainability.
“We can’t predict what the future of librarianship will look like,” Richard said. “It’s exciting to know this fund can help staff explore new approaches and continue growing far into the future.”
